Our Story

How Margenta came to be

Margenta was established in Sibu, Sarawak in 2015 by a small group of practitioners who had observed — over years of general legal practice — that the agreements governing creative work were often signed without being properly understood. Performers and writers regularly came in after the fact, once the terms had already taken effect, asking whether anything could be done about the clause they hadn't noticed.

The answer, most of the time, was that very little could be done at that stage. The work that mattered had to happen before signing, not after. That observation shaped the practice's founding principle: clear, early legal input at the moment an agreement arrives, rather than expensive remediation down the line.

Over the years, the practice has worked alongside independent content creators, regional television production companies, documentary producers, musicians, and digital media studios operating from Sarawak, Sabah, and across Peninsular Malaysia. The engagements vary — from a single agreement needing review before a performance contract closes, to multi-year portfolio advisory for an established studio managing rights across dozens of projects.

What holds the work together is a consistent approach: read the agreement thoroughly, explain the material points in plain terms, identify where the terms could be adjusted in the client's favour, and close the engagement with a conversation so the client can ask what they need to ask before responding to the other side.

How We Work

Professional standards at Margenta

Admitted to the Malaysian Bar

All solicitors at Margenta hold current practising certificates issued by the Bar Council Malaysia and comply with the Legal Profession Act 1976 and its subsidiary instruments.

Client Confidentiality

All matters are handled with strict professional confidentiality. Client communications and documents are stored securely and are not shared outside the engagement without written consent.

Written Engagement Terms

Each engagement is confirmed in writing before work begins, with scope, fees, and expected timelines set out clearly — so there is no ambiguity about what the engagement covers.

Continuous Professional Development

The team participates in ongoing CPD programmes through the Malaysian Bar and relevant industry associations, with particular focus on developments in intellectual property law and digital media regulation.

Plain-Language Commitment

Every advisory note is written to be understood without a legal background. Where technical terms are unavoidable, they are explained. Clients are never sent a document they cannot read and act upon themselves.

Fee Transparency

Fees are agreed in advance for each engagement. No surprise disbursements. Where scope changes, any fee adjustment is discussed and confirmed before additional work proceeds.

Our Values & Expertise

Media and entertainment law in the context of Malaysian creative practice

The legal documentation that surrounds creative work — talent agreements, production contracts, music clearances, distribution arrangements — often receives less attention than it deserves until a dispute makes the terms visible. Margenta's practice is built around the view that clear legal documentation protects creative relationships as much as it protects individual interests.

In Malaysia, media and entertainment work spans a wide range of contexts: Sarawak-based documentary production drawing on the region's cultural landscape, Peninsular Malaysian drama and digital series distributed across Southeast Asian streaming platforms, and independent music releases navigating mechanical royalties and synchronisation licensing. Each context brings its own set of agreement structures and rights considerations.

Margenta's approach is to understand the creative context first — what the project is, who is involved, where it is going — and then to apply the relevant legal analysis in a way that serves the project's direction rather than working against it. The aim is legal work that sits quietly in the background, holding the rights position steady, so the creative team can remain focused on the work itself.

The practice supports individual creators at early stages of their careers who are signing their first performance agreements, as well as established studios preparing a slate of projects for distribution across multiple territories. The fee structure is designed to be accessible across that range, with fixed-fee engagements so legal costs can be planned against a production budget from the start.
